CRTC asked to probe recent cellphone roaming fee hikes

Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne has asked the federal telecommunications regulator to look into wireless roaming fees, saying he’s concerned about companies hiking their rates while phone bills in other jurisdictions are generally declining.

In a letter to CRTC chairwoman and CEO Vicky Eatrides, Champagne said the regulator plays an important role in promoting affordability and empowering consumers to make informed decisions.

“This is part of a concerning trend to charge more for existing services broadly at a time when inflationary pressures are making it difficult for Canadians to pay their bills,” the minister wrote.

Champagne acknowledged the regulator’s wireless code does not prevent
