Olymel to close pork plant in Vallée-Jonction, Que., 800 jobs at risk

Olymel will close its factory in Vallée-Jonction, Que., Radio-Canada has learned.

The factory, a slaughterhouse and meat processing plant 70 kilometres south of Quebec City, is one of four run by the company in Quebec. 

The plant employs about 800 people. 

Olymel is a producer of pork and poultry products based in Saint-Hyacinthe, Que.

“It will be difficult for people here,” said Martin Bédard, a worker who stood in front of the factory. “Aside from here, what place is there to work at?”

An announcement about the plant closure was expected at a news conference at 10:30 a.m. ET, but workers arriving for their shifts at
