Islamic State, the Sunni Muslim militant group that claimed responsibility for two deadly blasts in predominantly Shia Iran this week, has been operating in the shadows since it was largely crushed by a U.S.-led coalition several years ago.

Here are some facts about the movement, which experts say is weakened but not eliminated.

Its goals remain the same

At the height of its powers, Islamic State imposed a reign of terror over millions of people and claimed control over swaths of the combined territories of Iraq and Syria.
