A dozen emergency alerts blared on cellphones and radios across the province immediately after the stabbing massacre on James Smith Cree Nation and during the manhunt for the killer. 

As a civilian RCMP employee began her testimony about those jarring alerts at the inquest into the deaths, the soothing beats of the drum circle’s song echoed out from the community gathering room down the hall.
