U.S. congressman George Santos, who faced outrage and mockery over a litany of fabrications about his heritage, education and professional pedigree, has been charged with a slew of federal criminal offences.
The charges against Santos, filed in the Eastern District of New York, include seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, one count of theft of public funds and two counts of making materially false statements to the House of Representatives.
Santos was taken into custody Wednesday at a federal courthouse on Long Island and was expected to make an initial court appearance later in the day.
