Simranjeet Kaur says she was already struggling to make ends meet when her employer allegedly didn’t pay her the wages she was owed from her job at an Ontario transportation company. 

The Brampton resident says she’s owed a little more than $7,000 for four months of work.

That money is just a fraction of the approximately $9 million in wages that advocates say employers in Ontario have pocketed in the 2021-22 fiscal year, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Finance. It was collected through freedom of information (FOI) requests by two Toronto-based organizations —
